Living with Floods Module : Assessment Task 1.
‘A case-study of the Gloucestershire river flooding event of July 2007.’
Using your classroom notes and if you wish research, you need to produce a case study of the flooding in Gloucestershire.
A copy of the assessment task can be downloaded here (1mb pdf) .
Please remember to refer to you class notes.
How do I set this out?
- Put the floods in their ‘place’. When did they happen and where? It might be useful to illustrate this with some annotated maps.
- Causes. Why did the floods happen? A good geographer will divide this into short-term causes and long-term causes, within these you will also be able to tell us which factors were natural and which were human. You can download the summary sheet of our discussions of the causes here (Pdf 1mb).
- Social impacts. These are to do with people and communities, remember that they can be positive and negative.
- Economic impacts. These are to do with money, they will most likely be negative, but did anyone benefit?
- Ecological Impacts. These are the impacts on the environment, remember our herons and drowning voles…
- Personal response. This is the part where you give your own opinion on the floods. What were your emotions and opinions on seeing the flooding? How did the flooding effect you? How will such flooding events effect you in the future? Do you care? Do you feel any guilt?
For those of you that are visual learners, you can download a copy of this structure here. (Word 29kb).
How do I present my work?
- You can present this piece in any format you wish, I.e. essay, PowerPoint or poster. Remember that if you wish to do a PowerPoint, but haven’t got this application at home, try using Open Office, please remember though to save your Impress presentation as a PowerPoint file.
- Remember that any images and maps must be annotated and referred to in your writing.
- Please remember to include a bibliography of any additional resources you use, such as web address for photos and articles etc. This should be set out as follows, name of website, url address, date last accessed, in a table format.
- Please make sure that you use geographical terminology whenever possible and make sure you work reads well, this means you can read it out aloud and it makes sense! Remember organisation.
Additional Resources you may find useful.
- B.B.C. Panorama, ‘Keep Britain Dry’. The webpage itself was some good background information, maps and graphics. As well as the Panorama programme, which is worth a watch.
- Of course the B.B.C. can searched for images and articles, try the search term ‘Tewkesbury floods’ or ‘Gloucester Floods’. Please make sure it is the right year!
- Flickr might also be useful again for images, use the same search terms.
- You might also want to revisit our perceptions of flooding work we did in class, which you will need to use for your personal response, you can download the PowerPoint here. (14mb).
- For those of you wanting to revisit the Severn drainage basin and its characteristics, please download the PowerPoint here (0.5mb).
- Some of you may want to revisit the La Nina effect, PowerPoint presentation can be downloaded here. (2mb) .
- Finally, those of you wanting to consider the features of drainage basins and what affects the likelihood of them flooding, can download the PowerPoint here. (9mb).
Best of Luck.
