Nice contributions today, you should now understand the advantages and disadvantages of shopping out of town and on the High Street. It was my aim to look at then the impacts of out of town shopping on the urban-rural fringe and the C.B.D., but we ran out of time due to our discussions. Please read this earlier post on the doughnut effect in preparation for the next lesson. Continue reading ‘Pre-Release 2008 - The Doughnut Effect’

Not had a particularly pleasant day, though no-one caught me out. Your shoelace is undone isn’t original.
I watched a good form assembly by a colleague this morning about April Fools’, including the famous Panorama crank. Thanks Alan for this.

The first part of the pre-release booklet focuses on shopping in the Bristol area, so a combination of People as Consumers and My Place.
Two consumer landscapes have been chosen, the first is an out of town shopping centre called the Mall, also called the Cribbs Causeway. You might want to have a look at these websites to become familiar with the centre and what is offers.

Tomorrow Year 11 begin preparing for their exam, one of Mrs M’s groups have already started! I will be also putting resources online. You can check to see if you’ve missed any posts by choosing the tag ‘prerelease2008‘, in the right hand column, under categories.
Might be useful for Year 10 also to follow this… you never know what might turn up in a mock.

I’m very please by the quality of people’s multi-media presentations, and thank you for those that requested additional time. I’m expecting the rest tomorrow, unless you have negotiated an extension.

Despite the credit crunch, I was searching the Internet today for mortgages. I noticed an interesting new account by H.S.B.C. aimed at migrants to the U.K. .What does the image tell us about the nationalities that are coming to live in the U.K.? Can you guess them all? Of course, H.S.B.C. is also a good example of a multi-national corporation.

Also some interesting bits in the news. Nottingham has been slated again for its burglary rate, someone should tell the students not to have their laptops in the bay windows of their rent houses. Also it looks like a major calving event is going to happen in Antarctica.
Year 11 are reminded that their multi-media presentations are due this Friday.

Year 11 should be working on their multi-media presentation of place. Remember that the deadline for this is next Friday. Due to the extended holiday weekend, you will have a limited amount of time to complete this in College.
On the last week we need to begin our work on the pre-release booklet. Exciting times.
I hope Year 10 had a good experience of work. This weekend I’m marking your second piece of coursework. At the moment editing is pulling the marks down.
You should also be preparing for your mock exam. It is key that you learn one process that we studied in Antarctica. You must also be able to draw an annotated diagram of it.
Have a happy weekend.

There have been some interesting pieces on the development of global culture just recently, that people might like to use as examples within their newspaper articles. The first is that Google is now the U.K.’s number one brand, beating the home grown companies, B.P. was third. A couple of challenges as well, remember that the global culture can be censored at state level. Pakistan brought chaos to the net by attempting to block YouTube, because of videos that were deemed not appropriate for the Muslim population, Bjork has recently angered Chinese officials with her recent comments on stage about Tibet. This may lead to stricter controls on Western pop music.

My apologises to Year 11, I haven’t got access to AOL at the moment, as they are having some issues, I feel a Virgin contract coming on…
