A local viewpoint…

About the redevelopment of Stanton site and its impact on the surrounding area. Essential viewing for Year 10 and good revision for Year 11.

An April Fools’ Antarctica type post…

Not had a particularly pleasant day, though no-one caught me out. Your shoelace is undone isn’t original. ;) I watched a good form assembly by a colleague this morning about April Fools’, including the famous Panorama crank.  Thanks Alan for this.

What does H.S.B.C. tell us about migration?

Despite the credit crunch, I was searching the Internet today for mortgages. I noticed an interesting new account by H.S.B.C. aimed at migrants to the U.K. .What does the image tell us about the nationalities that are coming to live in the U.K.? Can you guess them all? Of course, H.S.B.C. is also a good example of a multi-national corporation.

Also some interesting bits in the news. Nottingham has been slated again for its burglary rate, someone should tell the students not to have their laptops in the bay windows of their rent houses. Also it looks like a major calving event is going to happen in Antarctica.

Year 11 are reminded that their multi-media presentations are due this Friday;)

Coca-Cola update…

I’ve now finished looking at the second piece of coursework, if you’re desperate you can email me for feedback. The College system is down at the moment.

On the whole they were good, just a couple of pointers for the future.

  • You must make sure you provide alternate perspectives. Basically give both sides of the argument.
  • In the pilot many marks are given for personal opinions or reflections, but you must make sure that you explain your points of view and justify them.
  • Some of us are still not carefully reading our work,  does it make sense? Is the spelling and grammar appropriate? Marks are given for communication.
  • Always make sure you provide a bibliography of your resources.
  • I’m glad to say that only one individual fell into the temptation of cutting and pasting part of their work- no marks for doing this. :(

Some random bits…

Year 11 should be working on their multi-media presentation of place. Remember that the deadline for this is next Friday. Due to the extended holiday weekend, you will have a limited amount of time to complete this in College.

On the last week we need to begin our work on the pre-release booklet.  Exciting times. :)

I hope Year 10 had a good experience of work. This weekend I’m marking your second piece of coursework. At the moment editing is pulling the marks down.  :( You should also be preparing for your mock exam. It is key that you learn one process that we studied in Antarctica. You must also be able to draw an annotated diagram of it.

Have a happy weekend.

Some random thoughts…

Thanks to Year 10 who have completed their Coca-Cola coursework. The quality is very good.

My apologises to Year 11, I haven’t got access to AOL at the moment, as they are having some issues, I feel a Virgin contract coming on… :) I will provide you with feedback hopefully tomorrow.

London

This is a lovely presentation of London, for Year 10 you might want to consider whether this presentation is a true representation of place? Is Year 11 is this a true representation of dominant culture?

Antarctica- Google Earth and Whales…

Antarcticagoogle Google Earth has now updated its imagery of the continent, the new higher resolution images just confirm the isolation and extreme nature of the environment. Worth a peak, look out for Nunataks, Glaciers, Ice Shelves, Pack Ice and Pancake Ice.

Japan has also decided not to hunt 50 humpback whales in the Southern Ocean for ’scientific’ reasons, but will still hunt a 1000 whales of different species. This is despite a moratorium on hunting. Another example of how our extreme environment is used/exploited by humans.
