Derbyshire Information Resource

Monday, August 4th, 2008

DCC Online Information Resources includes various online encyclopaedias, dictionaries, and Infotrac Newspapers (”Access to 10 national newspapers from 1985 to date, 50 journals and periodicals covering subjects from astronomy and computing right through to geography and science. Also The Times digital archive from 1785-1985. If it made the headlines it’s here!”)…

Seems a well kept secret, you need to be a member of the library, great for next year’s cultural geography coursework or your other studies.

A blast from the past…

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

51EDD847DRL__AA240_ Saturday is my DVD catch up day, apart from ‘The Lives of Others’, which is excellent and a nice background for those going to Berlin, I purchased this blast from the past ‘Last Place on Earth’, the last hour we’ll use in class, because I think the failings and challenges of Scott’s expedition will inform your coursework nicely. Stars a young Martin Shaw and a younger Hugh Grant, I was nine when this was first released, but it has aged well… produced by Central, remember them? ;)

A child soldier…

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

51fgA8ead6L__AA240_

A belated present from a Geographer mate Jo, ‘A long way gone’, is the true story of Ishmael Beah, a child solider involved in the civil war in Sierra Leone, those of you familiar with the film ‘Blood Diamond’ will know something of the background to the conflict, it is a harrowing read, but well worth it to gain an insight into the childhood geographies of others. There are a number of multi-media resources on the website, including Ishmael reading the first chapter from this book.

Ishmael speaks here on the The Hour show

A truly inspirational individual.
