Street art, disguised vacant buildings, a beer festival (not too sure about that one…), all to attract people to Ilkeston.

Something old, something new…

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Some terms and ideas to discuss in September.

A recent online discussion of landscape brought be back to thinking about topophilia, the love of a place. Do you love your place?

I’ve also been interested for some time in the concept of psychogeography, how emotions and behaviour are governed by a place; one aspect of the sub-discipline is that in order to have a better understanding of our environment we must break from our daily routines and behaviours. Psychogeography is the basis of the Geography Collective’s work on Mission Explore.

Britain from above…

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Nice to see the B.B.C. is allowing some embedding of its official YouTube clips now.

I thought it was alright, got very excited by the mention of Dinorwig, remember that? Surprisingly it was mostly geography but managed to mention it not once. :(

You can watch the first episode on Iplayer. What did you think?

Stanton Update…

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Quite a bit of movement around the Stanton Redevelopment last week, this might be a useful case study for other Geographers as it possibly will become the largest area of redevelopment in the country. Updated plans can be found here.

What’s your P2 type?

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

whats-your-p2-type-v2

What is it?

Every postcode and output area in the UK has a P² type associated with it which reveals what characteristics people who live there are likely to have.

Have a go here, its interesting to put in the school postcode, how far does this agree with your experiences of the local area and our place?

According to the database I’m student in the community:)

New Starters are very interested in politics, and read broadsheet newspapers to keep up with world affairs. They are also very likely to smoke. Grocery shopping is done as cheaply as possible, by visiting chains such as Aldi and Lidl.

Mmm…

What does H.S.B.C. tell us about migration?

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Despite the credit crunch, I was searching the Internet today for mortgages. I noticed an interesting new account by H.S.B.C. aimed at migrants to the U.K. .What does the image tell us about the nationalities that are coming to live in the U.K.? Can you guess them all? Of course, H.S.B.C. is also a good example of a multi-national corporation.

Also some interesting bits in the news. Nottingham has been slated again for its burglary rate, someone should tell the students not to have their laptops in the bay windows of their rent houses. Also it looks like a major calving event is going to happen in Antarctica.

Year 11 are reminded that their multi-media presentations are due this Friday;)

Have the Simpsons got Britishness right?

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

THE SIMPSONS: Homer gets the "royal treatment" from guest stars J.K. Rowling, Prime Minister Tony Blair, Sir Ian McKellan, Evan Marriot (all playing themselves) and Edwina (guest star Jane Leeves) when THE SIMPSONS visit London in "The Regina Monologues" airing Sunday, Nov. 23 (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX. An American colleague is wanting our help with this question. He has viewed the Simpsons episode where they come to Britain and has noted

  • We use of certain kinds of phrases, i.e. my word, I say, cross the pond
  • Big Ben is iconic in terms of Britishness.
  • We have a dry wit and humour.
  • We are “classy”, everyone wears suits and tuxedos or, when in the Tower of London, are dressed more like the rural people.
  • We refer to women of power as “Mum” (Judy Dench and then The Queen)
  • Theatres play nothing but Shakespeare.
  • People tend to be rich.

How representative is this of Britishness?

Help the ’special relationship’. :)
