Old Dhaka

Just like this photo by Mike. A young boy became my unofficial tour guide around Old Dhaka on the last day. With the help of Peter, our interpreter, I asked him whether he went to school, he did, then Peter told him I was a teacher, shocked, the boy said he was on holiday!

One to watch- When hell freezes over…

Tonight

Channel 4 9.00 p.m.

Looks useful… especially for Year 10 that start their coursework soon and for Year 11 as revision.

douglas-mawson_sm Australian explorer and geologist Douglas Mawson’s 1912 Antarctic expedition was one of unfathomable hardship and tragedy. His companions Dr Xavier Mertz and Lt Belgrave Ninnis both perished - Ninnis first, falling into a crevasse with the bulk of their supplies. Even supplementing meals with sledge-dog meat couldn’t stave off the effects of malnutrition and exhaustion, and Mertz died, too, probably from the effects of too much toxic dog liver. Mawson was then alone, with just a few basic rations to sustain him for the 315-mile trek back to camp. Stopping short of actually eating dogs, Aussie adventurer Tim Jarvis attempts to re-create Mawson’s cruel journey. He fastidiously replicates almost every element, from calories consumed to primitive equipment and Mawson’s woefully inadequate clothing.

Description from the Radio Times.

I couldn’t find any information surprisingly on the Channel 4 website, but I did find a nice list of Antarctica travel tips, which might be useful Year 10 in the near future…. Wanda ;)

Part 1 Bangladesh Travels

Day One-  Travelling and Arrival in Bangladesh.

bangladeshflag After a sleepless night, I rose early at 5.00 a.m. to make my final preparations for my visit to Bangladesh. My car arrived at 7.00 a.m. and we made a two hour journey to Heathrow, I was to meet the group at 10.00 a.m. at Terminal 3. Only one problem, I had only met the group once for forty five minutes in July!

After standing around for a moment, I saw that a group of people were congregating and greeting each other, after plucking up the courage, I went across and introduced myself. I was slightly worried about the check in, I was convinced that my baggage was overweight; I was later to find that it was, we would be changing at Dubai, the airport has strict conditions on the size and weight of baggage that people can handle. After checking in we then headed through the usually security checks, to my surprise I didn’t set off one alarm. I also had a random shoe check. I spent time in departures with an art teacher called Kathy; it was nice to speak to someone who was as scared and excited as me.

Bangladesh return and images

I returned late last night from my International study visit to Bangladesh, I’m feeling very tired and run down at the moment. I’ve spent a couple of hours uploading pictures from the visit, I still have lots to upload and tag yet. I’m going to blog about the visit over the next couple of weeks, including the lessons I’ve learnt. Click on the image above to view the latest images.

Making a claim…

Thanks to Alan for sending me this link about the United Kingdom’s claims to the sea bed of Antarctica, resource exploitation anyone? This is a good read for both Year Ten and Eleven. Also a nice set of pictures showing newly discovered creatures that inhabit the Southern Ocean.

Flooding video sources…

Thanks to Sam, who has directed me to some great first hand videos of the Gloucestershire floods on YouTube, whilst preparing his coursework task. An example below.

Living with Floods Assessment.1

_39138556_floodsign203 Sorry about the lack of blogging Year Ten and Eleven, I’ve just been up to my eyes with work, as many of you have. :) After half-term I promise to get into the usual routine…

My group of Year 11 Geographers should be researching and drafting their coursework, a case study of a flood, over the half-term, ready for writing up in the computers rooms when we return. I’ve now set up a support page on the blog with associated resources and links. I’ll decide the deadline when we return.

I’m sorry that I won’t be able to provide support over the half-term, I shall be in Bangladesh, which is the case-study in our third piece of coursework.

Please remember that work in Year 11 is now worth 50% of your total mark.

Well done on the Coca-Cola work… :)

Year Ten, get ready to meet Wanda…. ;)
