Cultural Objects…

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

Just playing with this idea in my head to show change over time in culture

Slide1

The above image represents some ‘cultural objects’ associated with my teenage years ( some time ago now ;) ) , I could have put a couple of examples but just decided on the first idea that came into my head.  A couple of questions to think about…

a) What are your teenage ‘cultural objects’?

b) How and why are they different?

c) Do they tell us anything about the countries shaping that culture? Why might this be? (I think there is a clear pattern from my choices. ;) )

It would be nice to have some examples from the 60s, 70s and 80s as well…

Earthquakes, floods, falling stocks and Elvis..

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

I’ve been enjoying watching my investments fall in value over the last week, another example of globalisation, American banks giving loans to people who can’t afford to pay them back… and I was distressed to find out that Elvis was dead.

On a more serious note a strong earthquake in Peru has lead to several hundred deaths.

Alan has highlighted an article on about the potential of London flooding, some great animations as well. Some further reading can be found here and here on the blog.

The B.B.C. reveals all, not the most sensible idea…

Hitting the water at such speed could knock you out, you may not also know the depth of the water or whether rocks are present. This man was very lucky.

My favourite views…

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

Alan has asked us to about our favourite British views, as featured in tonight’s programme on I.T.V. . So here are mine…

  • Cwn Idwal, Snowdoina, Wales.

Cwm Idwal

I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of seeing the views around this corrie, either from the lip or the headwall, it’s always a pleasure to bring groups of new students each year and watch their jaws drop…

  • Dovedale, Peak District, Derbyshire.

Primary school visit on my birthday, leading the class across the stepping stones, ice-creams, it all seemed ‘wild’ to a boy from a mining town.

  • Nottingham Castle, Nottingham.

Completely personal, and to some perhaps not attractive, I’ve always done a lot of travelling by train, as you approach Nottingham station, the castle (though it isn’t really, long story…) comes into view, at this point I know that I’m home.
