Pupils to be taught about the Olympic games - instead of geography

By Tony_Cassidy

According to the Daily Mail. Slightly misleading, so don’t worry, Geography isn’t disappearing so that Olympic Studies can be on the timetable, this is about the development of the new Geography National Curriculum. The Government has suggested that Geography teachers should teach about the Olympics, Global Warming, Trade, Sustainability and events like the Tsunami.

Schools minister Lord Adonis said: “We want geography to excite pupils so that they continue studying the subject when they leave school.”

I’d be slightly worried if students didn’t study any of these topics at some point at Key Stage 3. Poor rivers gets it in the neck, slightly ironic, considering the last week’s events. So does continental drift, but isn’t an understanding of this important for tectonics?

Oh well ;)
