My Place -Writing up your work…

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Before you do anything, make sure you have

  • Completed all your evidence, graphs etc…
  • Given each piece of evidence a number.  For example, a photo of Upper Bath Street may be P1.

Yes, each piece of evidence requires a number!  :)

You can need to return to your original hypothesis (see your front sheet). Using your evidence you must state whether you can support or dismiss your hypothesis.

Here is the example of a piece of writing from the support sheets.

analysis

How do I start?

  • Write your hypothesis at the top of a new page.
  • Take each piece of evidence in turn. When referring to your evidence, use the number you gave it, E.G. photograph one shows a car park on Upper Bath Street…
  • Describe what it shows you, if available use figures to support your descriptions. E.G. Audit one of Upper Bath sheet was given an overall score of 80%…
  • Explain your findings, say why you think you got what you did! If possible, use geographical terminology. E.G. I think Upper Bath Street scored well on the audit because the environment is good, it has been pedestrianised which makes it safer for shoppers…
  • Try and cross-reference your evidence. E.G. Audit one of Upper Bath Street was given an overall score of 80%, this is very positive, it means it has a good environment, this is supported by photograph one of Upper Bath Street, as you can see..
  • Try to spot any contradictions. E.G. Audit two shows South Street, it was given an overall score of 35%, this surprises me, because my labels on photograph one of South Street are mostly positive, perhaps this is because…

Finally

  • Considering all your evidence, can you support or dismiss your hypothesis? Explain why, why not. E.G. Overall I think I can dismiss my hypothesis because..

You may have to redraft this several times, before you are happy with your final piece. Be concise and avoid repetition.

Finally, make sure you have completed everything on the checklist. You can now organise your work, and produce a front cover with your hypothesis and name on it.

The deadline for this piece is Monday 18th of June.

Remember, no coursework, no mark.

Good luck.  :)

What can I do with my audits?- Matron…

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Calculations

Firstly, you need to make sure you have completed your totals and frequencies.

You also need to find out your overall %’s for each audit.

To do this, divide the total that you gave, by the maximum possible for the audit, and times the result by hundred.

For example,

The total was 15. The maximum score possible on the audit was 50.

15/50*100= 30 %

Obviously, the higher the audit % the better!

What can I do with my audits then?

Several things…

For each audit you could bar graph the frequencies, which would look like this…

frequency

Of course, you can then tidy this up and paste into a Word document.

You could also bar graph the results of each audit according to the category, this person has actually stuck their graphs on to their map.

auditmap

It would be really useful to bar graph the overall %’s for each audit, this will allow you to compare them with ease.

%environmentaudit

Remember, the higher the %, the better the feature you have investigated.

Make sure all your graphs have labelled axes and titles.

Also try to make sure graphs are the same scale, this makes them easier to compare.

Mapping the location of where you took your audits is also useful. :)

If you need help on Excel, let me know.

My Place -the write-up

Sunday, June 3rd, 2007

Tomorrow, we’ll be in the computer rooms writing up our My Place work. Listen carefully in briefing. You will only have three lessons to do this, so you need to be prepared and work hard.

I’ve created a checklist here for my group. (This covers the collective techniques you have chosen.) It reflects the basic requirement of the work, it is a summary of your help sheets…

Best wishes and good luck….

Ben Fogle on Geography

Friday, June 1st, 2007

benfogle Nice quote from T.V. presenter Ben Fogle in the TES about Geography today,

‘Geography was the lesson I always looked forward to most. It was a form of escapism. It could be bleak mid-winter outside but inside you were learning about African farming methods or the Great Lakes. No other lesson had that excitement.’
