CITAL-TAL Forum…

For Teachers and Educators…

One of the areas I have been working on over the last half-term is co-ordinating teaching and learning at my College.

As part of sharing our practice with other educators I have now set up the CITAL-TAL blog, please be gentle it is currently under construction. :)

You can read a ’snap-shot’ of our practice and other projects within our teaching and learning newsletter, which will be published half-termly.

Much will not come as a surprise for my online Geography colleagues, in fact, many are credited with ideas.

We are keen to have conversations with other educators across the world, whatever the subject specialism or age range. Please feel free to leave comments.

If you have a teaching and learning co-ordinator at your establishment, I would be grateful if you could pass on the link. This is a new role within our College and I’m keen to discuss it with others.

We now have a Research and Development Group, as a group we are keen to visit schools involved in innovative projects or just to see good practice. Of course, you are welcome to visit us!

Many thanks

Tony

My Place Fieldwork

It's the Beatles, Tesco Way! Well done for this afternoon! :) Both groups were well prepared for their data collection, your attitude was brilliant and hopefully some good coursework will come out of it. :)

Myself and Mrs M had a nice stroll, had time to talk to ex-students and fit in a visit to the nice cafe on Lower Bath Street. One person also had time to fit in a hair cut! A big thank you to Tesco for allowing students to complete audits and take photographs on their site.

My group have work to complete over the holiday, this had be found under work set.

When you return you will have three lessons in the computer room to present your data and write up your findings. Over the holiday you should

  • Annotate your photographs.
  • If you were absent, please see me to collect your work, you will need to gather your fieldwork data over the holiday.
  • If not yet complete, please finish writing up your chosen techniques and your sampling methods, what we have called this preparation.

You will see that I have added an additional ‘My Place’ page to the blog, this now contains support sheets, the hypothesis sheet and preparation sheets will be uploaded during the holiday.

What makes a good annotated photograph?

Firstly, the annotations must relate to your hypothesis.

For example, if you’re looking at the attractiveness of an environment, you should focus on identifying the positive and negatives of the environment, then explain why they are good or bad.

This area is pedestrianised, this will be attractive for shoppers because it is safer, as there will be no cars in the area. They can shop freely without having to worry about traffic.

Or for car parks…

This car park has CCTV coverage, people are more likely to leave their car here, because they will feel it will be safe. CCTV may deter criminals. People may also use this car park at night, when it is dark, they will feel safer returning to their car knowing someone will be watching them. (In a good way…)

Try to include terminology as well, the words that Geographers use.

Consider this example below.

This is an example of A* annotations, notice how they have used different colours for positive and negative features. They have identified different features of the environment and explained why they have a positive or negative impact. The comments are ‘meaty‘.

If you’re interested in annotating your digital images in Word, you can find a help sheet under

‘My Place’.

Please remember the basics, include titles for your images, where was it taken, the time and the date. You might also want to make a brief comment about the weather conditions on the day. Remember overcast, cold, dark and generally miserable conditions will have an impact on how you perceive the image; as a result you may be more negative in your annotations. As will the day/time of day it was taken, you could be more positive about an image that is busy with shoppers, but at the end of the day, an empty shopping environment might reveal the litter left behind….

When you will return, the first task will be to link your photos to locations on your maps.

If you have a problem with your images, I have a set of Ilkeston pictures on Flickr, free feel to send me further ones to add to the collection….

Last point, if you require help, please email me.

Finally, Happy Hols! :)

Coursework Preparation…

Had a great afternoon, some nice work coming along. I’ll post this under work set as well, because it will rapidly disappear down the page…

A couple of things to do for Monday.

  • Make sure you finish your preparation for the fieldwork. You must by Monday have completed and printed any appropriate tables you need.
  • Please also type up your preparation thoughts, think carefully about the validity and reliability of your samples and field techniques you have chosen. There is no need to print this, but please, as with all coursework, keep an ‘e’ copy.
  • Please make sure you bring your permission letters to me a.s.a.p.
  • Make sure you are kited correctly, i.e. mobile phones and digital cameras for pictures.
  • If you require any help, email, or come and see me.

We will be continuing the course on Monday, but we’ll spend five minutes sorting coursework packs, that I’ll deliver to you on Tuesday afternoon.

If you are away on Monday you must come prepared for Tuesday, if you are away for the fieldwork, it is your responsibility to collect data over half-term.

Over half-term I’ll put on the blog the resource sheets and the presentation I used to introduce the task.

After the return from half-term, you will have three lessons in the computer room to complete your data presentation and write-up.

I’ll also be adding to my Ilkeston photos whilst we are conducting the fieldwork.

Spot any patterns with this post?

Remember, this is your coursework, and will reflect your effort…

Eurovision Song Contest- The Distribution.

Just a quick resource I prepared this morning to help debrief the Eurovision map skills exercise.

I’ll might update it to show the individual countries, but I ‘m in a bit of a rush this morning. I think the important skill after mapping is to describe the distribution.
