Penguins and a congratulations!

By Tony_Cassidy

We started today with the Global Warming video and discussed some ways we could tackle the issue on an individual level.

Then we moved onto animal adaptations, we watched two clips from ‘March of the Penguins’ (there is a great website which goes with this film.). The first showing how the penguins have to carefully transfer the egg between male and female, without it falling onto the ice. Gasps, as one egg rolls onto the ground and a couples’ journey comes to an end. Of course, the penguin’s feet hold the egg and they have a small surface area that allows limited contact with the surface. They also rock slightly to avoid constant contact, whilst a layer of fat provides the egg with protection from the harsh climate. We later discovered that the veins and arteries in the feet are close together, this allows the effective transfer of heat.

We then viewed a clip of the male penguins huddled together in a rookery to share body heat, enabling them to cope with the difficult Antarctica winter.

Together, we then completed a tops and tails exercise of penguin adaptations, which we then used to annotate a diagram. Run of the mill, but highly enjoyable!

Finally, congratulations on your first piece of coursework, the quality was outstanding and all completed on time. Please vote or leave your comments on the coursework task. Well done :)
