Antarctic Tourism

By Tony_Cassidy

This week’s task is to complete some research about tourism in Antarctica.

Your presentation should consider

  • What motivates people to visit Antarctica? We will discuss some points in class.
  • When most trips go and why? You will need to consider the climate here.
  • Travel Arrangements. How will you get there?
  • Where in Antarctica you are likely to visit?
  • What are the main sights you would see?
  • Code of Conduct- how do you make sure you don’t spoil Antarctica when you visit?

Escorted Antarctica Tours has a page devoted to the conduct of tourists.

Gap Adventures has a useful Code of Conduct for sustainable tourists.

Australian Antarctica Division also has information for potential tourists.

  • Potential costing.
  • Overall do you think Antarctica is ready for mass tourism?

The National Geographic has an article on the rise of tourism in Antarctica and its impact.

Responsible Travel also has an article discussing this point.

Some useful links.

General Links.

Cool Antarctica has some useful information about Antarctica Cruises and Travel.

The question of travelling to Antarctica was asked in the Times Newspaper travel section.

You might want to look at the tourism section of the Discover Antarctica website.

Tour Operators.

Responsible Travel has a number of links to Antarctic holidays.

Antarctica Connection.

How you present your work is up to you! Deadline for this piece will be Monday 11th of December.

Remember, no cut and paste, it must be in your own words. All images and source text must be acknowledged.

I thought that the task was excellent and was a great help towards the coursework.
(Our group did this before the coursework.)
I never knew how many locations you can fly to Antarctica from!

Thanks Stringy, I decided to do this after the coursework, mostly because I didn’t want the group getting confused between expedition and tourism, Wanda wanted to walk it! :)
