My friend Jo is currently holidaying in Australia and sent me this picture, I think it speaks volumes, what is this man writing? what is he planning?
Just liked it.

I missed the first programme, it is on DVD, so settled down to watch tonight. I had learnt from Alan Parkinson and from tonight’s epsiode that there is one major flaw in the re-enacment, basically dogs can no longer be used in Antarctica, therefore it is taking place on the ice caps of Greenland. David Muir on EdCompBlog makes an interesting post about Kilture, how Scottish heritage has been adapted to suit the perceptions of tourists. Interestingly, it is one aspect that has been debated for a long time in my home city of Nottingham. Tourists expect to come and see a medieval castle, of Robin Hood legend fame, but are allegedly disappointed by the 17th century mansion house on the rock. The original castle was demolished by parliament after the Civil War. Charles I had chosen Nottingham as a rallying point. Much thought has been given to knocking down the house and restoring the castle, a case of place changing to reflect the perception of others.

Would it matter? Yeap to me it would, as Nottingham is ‘my place’, though some find the mansion nondescript, it has always been my marker on a return via train, it heralds ‘home’ to me.

Favourite blog Houtlust has a post, ‘Get on your Bike’ ,with films designed by Dutch students to encourage people to get out of their cars and on their bike. Might make nice little starters for sustainable transport, or perhaps students could design their own get on your bike video. My favourite is the second, bikes can set you free…

Interesting post from Catholicgauze featuring Buzztracker ,which maps the day’s main news stories. Interestingly, Africa seems not on the newsbeat today… I wonder, with the exception of the obvious international stories, how geographical reporting of the news differs from country to country, would the same pattern exist?

Despite not always recognising some of their content as Geography, I do love the BBC. The latest addition to their great web content is the Panorama archives. There are programmes from the year 2000, with transcripts and in some cases video and audio files. Sadly, not whole programmes, in some cases the old video is in realplayer. Why? (more…)

Interesting article on the BBC about how the digital divide no longer exists as a simple ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’. Researchers have found that there are 23 different tribes, they have mapped this data and on the Spatial Literacy website, you can find out which type your area falls into.

I’ve now rested and think I have this Wordpress thing in hand. I must mention Doug Belshaw’s guides to Edupress, which have been very useful over the last day and a half. Doug’s teaching blog is also very good and has been a source of inspiration, even for an (correct this time) Historian.
Later I’m going to post on the old blog the new address and create a link from my website. All the new resources I develop will be hosted on radicalgeography.
I have also been playing with podcasting, so I hope to give a weekly round up, as well as podcasting revision notes for each of the lessons as I go.
