The U.S. Naval Historical Centre has a number of paintings showing Operation Deep Freeze to the continent in 1955. The Americans established a based called Little America at McMurdo Sound.
A number of perspectives can be seen here, from the harsh realities of the environment
to the serene landscape
and life on the barren (?) continent.
Nice visual stimuli for students to unpick. I’ve looked hard for other internet art resources showing extreme environments, but failed. If you do know of any, please let me know.
